New-gen ransomware gangs have crypto in their sights

Ransomware attack payments have climbed to an average of $1.5m, up from $812,000 per attack the previous year, according to UK cyber security firm, Sophos. Its survey found UK firms paid more than the global average, at $2.1m. Recent high-profile victims included the Dallas City Government in 2023, which forced the closure of the Dallas Municipal Court and wider police activities. In the same year, a Moveit file transfer app vulnerability enabled ransomware attackers to steal data from multiple firms, including British Airways and the BBC.
