New hacking group targeting healthcare infects MRI, X-ray machine

A group of hackers called Orangeworm is targeting the healthcare sector and has infected computers used to control medical imaging devices, according to Symantec. The group deploys malware called Kwampirs, which has been found on computers supporting machines such as MRIs and X-Rays. The hackers gather information from their victims’ networks and are likely conducting espionage rather than stealing patient data. The group has been active since 2015 and primarily targets the healthcare sector, as well as other companies connected to it. Symantec has provided a fact sheet to help organizations determine if they have been compromised.
