NHS in winter: Sharp rise in North West hospitals put on highest alert

Hospitals in the north-west of England issued a severe “Opel 4” alert 32 times last winter, as they grappled with a 418% rise in the number of “Opel 3” alerts, according to data from NHS England. Contributors to the strain included intense winter illnesses, a lack of staff and a lack of hospital beds.
