NHS issues national alert over blood shortages for just second time ever
The NHS is facing “unprecedentedly low levels” of national stocks for O negative and O positive blood types due to increased demand from hospitals and a high number of unfilled appointments at donor centres. The NHS has issued an amber alert, only the second in its history, urging hospitals to restrict the use of O type blood to essential cases only and to find possible substitutes.
