While numerous US professions impose age limits, there are no official restrictions for the presidency. Previous and current political candidates have shown signs of age-related cognitive decline. In response, some suggest an upper-age limit for all federal elected officials and judges. However, opponents argue that this could restrict the public’s right to free elections. Others argue that mental decline varies among individuals, rendering any cut-off arbitrary. Such limits wouldn’t prevent older individuals from offering guidance or undertaking similar roles, although imposing age maximums would require a constitutional amendment.
