Northern Care Alliance IT disruption resulted in one serious incident

The Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust in the UK had a major IT disruption in May 2022 that led to incorrect patient information being sent to a coroner, among other incidents. The disruption was linked to a defect in the VMware vSAN software. About 1,000 appointments were cancelled, and the estimated cost of managing the outage is £675,000. Following the incident, the NHS trust plans to investigate the development of a backup cloud-based clinical system among other recommendations.
