OIG estimates 1 in 4 for-profit nursing homes not complying with infection control staffing rules

Approximately 25% of for-profit nursing homes in the US are likely breaching federal regulations on infection control staff, posing a risk to residents and workers, the HHS’ Office of Inspector General estimates. In a sample of 100 facilities, it found 17 that may not have complied with infection preventionist training rules, and seven failing to designate an infection preventionist. The homes admitted to challenges including hiring and retaining qualified staff and changing regulatory requirements.
