Patient matching and biometrics: A match made in heaven?

Electronic health records (EHRs) are widely used in the U.S. healthcare system, but challenges with patient matching between different records hinder EHR interoperability. Biometric technologies offer a potential solution to improve patient matching. Three use cases for patient matching were discussed: registration, remote identity demonstration, and coordination of care between healthcare organizations. Patient matching issues can harm patients and drive up costs. Patient and healthcare executive perspectives on biometrics were explored, revealing interest but also concerns about cost and privacy. Unanswered questions and lessons from Accenture Security’s work with biometrics were highlighted.
