Patient records exposed in data breaches doubled in 2023

The number of patient records exposed in cyber data breaches doubled in 2023 compared to 2022, despite a slight decrease in the number of breaches, reports cybersecurity firm Fortified Health Security. Over 116 million records were compromised in 655 breaches. Breaches from hacking and IT incidents accounted for 80% of the reported breaches. Healthcare breaches cost around $11 million on average, an increase of over 50% since 2020.
