Patient matching is a major challenge for healthcare interoperability. Pew Charitable Trusts conducted a study and found that patients overwhelmingly support the use of biometrics as a unique identifier. However, there are concerns about resistance from patients, the need for standards and cost-effectiveness, and fears of being tracked by the government. Implementing biometrics will require hospitals and consumers to be willing to use them, and standards and infrastructure will need to be developed.
