Privacy concerns have been raised over plans to share the medical records of all GP patients in England with third parties. Over 55 million patient medical histories will be accessible on a database for various purposes, including research and policy development. Patients have until 23 June to opt out of the scheme. Campaigners have criticised the lack of public awareness and questioned the legality of the plans. The NHS previously attempted similar plans in 2013 but abandoned them due to confidentiality complaints. The Royal College of GPs has urged greater communication and transparency regarding patient data usage.
