Report: Higher-Rated MA Plans Are Less Available in Vulnerable Counties

Medicare Advantage plans in socially vulnerable counties are less likely to receive higher ratings, exacerbating health disparities, according to a study published in the JAMA Network Open. Based on CMS’ star ratings for 2023 and the Social Vulnerability Index, the researchers noted that disadvantaged areas were more prone to lower-rated plans. The study suggests modifying the quality bonus payments linked to star ratings, and a switch to plan-level star ratings.
