Researchers propose ketogenic diet as a novel treatment for anorexia nervosa

A study in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition proposes a therapeutic ketogenic diet (TKD) as a form of treatment for individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN). The neurobiological model suggests that TKD can help regulate brain glucose utilization and energy metabolism, potentially addressing the psychological and metabolic factors contributing to AN’s persistence. The preliminary findings showed that TKD could stabilize weight and reduce negative feelings associated with food and body image. More extensive research is required to confirm the efficacy and safety of TKD as a treatment for AN.
