Royal Free breached UK data law in 1.6m patient deal with Google’s DeepMind | Google

London’s Royal Free hospital has fallen foul of data protection laws through sharing sensitive information on 1.6 million patients with Google subsidiary DeepMind. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) found that patients hadn’t been adequately informed before the data was used in a testing phase. The data had been shared with DeepMind through a partnership intended to produce a health care app. The ICO found the use of real patient data for testing to be beyond the hospital’s authority.
