Cyberattacks on the healthcare industry can have severe consequences such as compromising patient data and disrupting patient care. Senator Mark Warner has called for the establishment of a healthcare cybersecurity czar to address the lack of coordination between the Department of Health and Human Services and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Warner’s policy paper also suggests expanding regulations, creating a healthcare cybersecurity workforce development program, and providing incentives for compliance and penalties for noncompliance. The report has prompted discussions about the industry’s cybersecurity posture and the need for stronger protection of patient data.
