Single-photon source paves the way for practical quantum encryption

Researchers have developed a high-purity single-photon source that can function at room temperature, a breakthrough for practical quantum communication applications. Using hexagonal boron nitride and a hemispherical solid immersion lens, the team built a photon source six times more efficient than previous designs. The portable device, also capable of quantum key distribution, is small, user-friendly, and can work with existing telecoms infrastructure.
