SMBs face surge in “malware free” attacks

“Malware free” attacks, legitimate tool use, and business email compromise (BEC) scams posed the biggest threats to small and medium businesses (SMBs) in Q3 2023, according to Huntress’ SMB Threat Report. It revealed 56% of security incidents involved use of legitimate tools and binaries. Additionally, 65% of threats utilised remote monitoring and management (RMM) software. The report also indicated most identity-focused attacks involved malicious forwarding or account takeovers.
