NHS England’s report reviewing the WannaCry attack on its systems has spotlighted the deficiencies in the NHS’s cyber defences. It showed that an historic lack of investment in network security, unprotected legacy software and many hardware items that could not be protected all contributed to a poor response. The Chief Information Officer of NHS England warns that although the devices within the NHS that are running on unsupported Windows XP software has fallen to 1.8%, most of the devices infected by WannaCry were running on an unprotected Windows 7 OS.
