Stanford University’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital is notifying nearly 13,000 patients of a data breach after a hospital laptop containing medical information was stolen. This is the fifth major breach for the university. The hospital is offering affected families a year of identity theft protection. Officials say they have taken steps to prevent future breaches, including improving encryption and providing enhanced IT security and compliance education. The stolen laptop was old and non-functioning, and the employee had already started using a newer and encrypted laptop.
