Stanford uses AI to navigate health information sharing with teens and their families
Stanford Medicine Children’s Health is using AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to balance privacy and information sharing for teenage patients. AI monitors provider notes for sensitive content, while NLP detects inappropriate account use by guardians. This system respects teens’ privacy while keeping guardians adequately involved. It also identified 50% of patient portal accounts were accessed inappropriately by guardians, leading to a custom intervention that reduced errors. Its success led Epic to incorporate a similar system.
