Steam enforces SMS verification to curb malware-ridden updates

Valve is implementing additional security measures to address malware outbreaks from compromised publisher accounts on its Steam platform. From October 24, 2023, developers will need to pass an SMS-based security check before updating games. However, some experts argue that the solution is imperfect, citing the vulnerability of SMS 2FA to SIM-swap attacks, and suggesting authenticator apps or physical security keys as superior alternatives.
