Stolen laptop leads to breach notification for 20,000 Lifespan patients

Lifespan, Rhode Island’s largest health network, has informed around 20,000 patients that their sensitive information may have been exposed due to the theft of an unencrypted and unprotected laptop belonging to an employee. The laptop contained emails that potentially included patient information such as names, medical record numbers, and partial address information. Lifespan is re-educating employees and enhancing security measures to prevent future incidents.
