Study offers insight into incarceration’s toll on youth health

Research led by Dr Samantha Boch, of the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing, found that children with involvement in the justice system or whose families have been involved in the system are more likely to have physical and mental health issues. Using data from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the study revealed that 2.2% of youth likely had a parent incarcerated or faced some type of confinement as a juvenile, and these accounted for a disproportionate number of health diagnoses and care visits.
