Study reveals how bacteria pass on traits without DNA changes

Bacterial cells can “remember” temporary changes and pass on these “memories” for multiple generations, a study by Northwestern University and University of Texas-Southwestern found. This could potentially be utilized in medical applications, like fighting antibiotic resistance. The research, which contradicts the belief that physical traits in bacteria are determined by their DNA, will be published in the journal Science Advances.
