The CommonSpirit ransomware attack: 1 year later

In October 2022, a ransomware attack disrupted CommonSpirit Health’s IT network prompting the diversion of ambulances, appointment cancellations, and an estimated $160m in costs. Although hackers didn’t obtain data directly, they copied personal information from file-share servers. Hundreds of thousands of patients were affected, and recovery from the breach took weeks. While the financial impact is still unclear, the incident has led to several class-action lawsuits. Cyberattacks in healthcare continue to rise nationwide.
