The First Year of Georgia’s Medicaid Work Requirement Is Mired in Red Tape
Georgia’s experimental Medicaid expansion, Pathways, which requires participants to prove they are working or studying 80 hours a month to get coverage, is falling short of enrollment targets. It had less than 4,500 enrollees by late July, compared to a goal of more than 25,000. Critics blame the lack of success on a complicated enrollment process and systemic flaws, while research shows the red tape particularly affects black and Hispanic people. The scheme is set to expire in 2025.
