The Future Belongs to Digital Pathology

Artificial intelligence (AI) advances could improve pathology practices, speeding up results and helping detect and stage malignancies. Technologies can automate repetitive tasks and provide a ‘second set of eyes’ to look at slides. Such capabilities also allow for viewing and marking up whole slide images and the creation of predictive models. Trials have shown that AI tools could make diagnoses as accurately as human pathologists, but much faster. Implementing AI and machine learning in digital pathology may also address the global shortage of pathologists and efficiency issues.
