Scientists from the University of Luxembourg have discovered that the formation of tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) could be the key to how microglia relieve neurons of toxic protein aggregates linked with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Genetic mutations associated with these conditions affect TNT formation, thereby limiting microglia support. Restoring TNT function may slow progression of these diseases.
