Two dead, 179 exposed to superbug at UCLA Medical Center
UCLA has identified seven patients, two of whom have died, as being infected by the superbug CRE. The patients were infected by contaminated endoscopes used to treat digestive system ailments. Other hospitals have also struggled with how to deal with healthcare acquired infections (HAIs), which are estimated to cost the U.S. healthcare system $4.5 billion each year. President Obama has proposed $1.2 billion in funding to fight hospital acquired infections produced by superbugs.
