The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has paid a $1.14 million ransom to unlock important data that was encrypted in a ransomware attack. The attack, which occurred on June 3, resulted in the encryption of some servers. While patient medical records were not believed to be exposed, UCSF decided to pay the ransom to regain access to the data. Opportunistic cyberattacks have been on the rise during the COVID-19 pandemic.
