Medical training is known for causing high levels of burnout and mental health problems. Traditional approaches to address these issues focused on an individual’s skills and knowledge, while newer methods aim to change the training environment itself. However, author and otolaryngologist Kevin C. McMains argues for a narrative approach, framing medical education as a “hero’s journey” to inspire identity formation and respect for the inherent sacrifices of the profession.
