UnitedHealth says Change hackers stole health data on ‘substantial proportion of people in America’
UnitedHealth Group confirmed a ransomware attack on Change Healthcare, its health tech subsidiary, led to the theft of a significant amount of Americans’ private healthcare data. The cybercriminals, called RansomHub, have begun publishing and threatening to sell the data unless a ransom is paid. UnitedHealth has confirmed a ransom was paid to protect patient data but would not disclose the amount. The incident, which resulted in substantial outages in the healthcare sector, has reportedly cost UnitedHealth over $870 million in losses.
