Verizon 2023 DBIR: Ransomware remains steady but complicated
Ransomware attacks plateaued in 2022, remaining at 24% of breaches, according to Verizon’s 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report. Threat actors adjusted their tactics to bypass improved security in organizations, turning to data theft and extortion and targeting healthcare, previously seen as “off limits”. The shift is felt as security technologies better respond to breaches. The use of Log4j, a catastrophic coding flaw revealed in December 2021, featured in 0.4% of incidents, with ransomware involved in 26% of these cases.
