WannaCry cyberattack laid bare NHS obsolete computers
A 2016 survey by Citrix found that 90% of National Health Service (NHS) trusts were still operating computer systems using Microsoft’s Windows XP software, which was launched in 2001. Microsoft extended support for the software, which was ceased in 2006, for a year up until 2014, but frequently recommended the NHS update their systems. Bansal, a doctor and NHS Clinical Entrepreneur, argued that the NHS was left exposed to a cyber attack, such as this month’s WannaCry ransomware attack that took many hospitals offline.
