We Need to Open Up the AI Black Box
AI’s “black box” refers to complex underlying technology that users may not fully understand. While some argue this doesn’t matter as long as actionable insights are obtained, many physicians favour tools they can comprehend. Current algorithms lack endorsements from respected medical organisations, fostering scepticism among healthcare professionals. Despite the complexity of the math behind AI, visual tools can aid clinicians’ understanding. Developers are recommended to aim for transparency, with innovative approaches like AI that visually identifies abnormalites on radiograms already in use.
