What does ‘patient engagement’ really mean?

The author is not a fan of the term “patient engagement” but supports the idea of patients being involved in their own health. The recent HIMSS conference highlighted the importance of patient engagement, with many organizations promoting tools and strategies for engaging patients. The author believes that patient portals and websites are a good first step, but true engagement requires more human interaction and intervention from healthcare providers.
