What is ‘Wanna Decryptor’? A look at the ransomware that brought down the NHS
The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) was the target of a ransomware attack on 12 May that crippled multiple parts of the system. The malware in question, believed to be called Wanna Decryptor, was delivered via loaded hyperlinks sent in emails, website ads or Dropbox links. Once activated, Wanna Decryptor encrypts all the files it finds and demands a ransom for the restore key. An investigation is ongoing but the NHS says no patient data has been accessed.
