A Russian cybercrime group, Qilin, is believed to have attacked pathology services at several major London hospitals, disrupting NHS services and causing cancellations and rerouting of procedures. Former head of the National Cyber Security Centre, Ciaran Martin, says the group is likely motivated by profit and unlikely to have realised the extent of the disruption they would cause. Qilin, active since late 2022, uses ransomware tools to block computer system access until a ransom is paid.
