WHO, coronavirus testing lab hit by hackers as opportunistic attacks ramp up

The World Health Organization has reported an increase in cyberattacks as it deals with the COVID-19 pandemic. Hackers, including the group DarkHotel, have attempted to steal passwords by spoofing login portals. Healthcare organizations, including the US Department of Health and Human Services and a UK-based medical facility testing coronavirus vaccines, have also been targeted. The Maze ransomware group attacked Hammersmith Medicines Research, demanding ransom payments for patient records. The attack was repelled, but private documents of over 2,300 patients were leaked online. The rise in cyber threats is reflected in a surge of COVID-19-related email phishing attacks.
