Why are hospitals becoming more of a target for ransomware attacks?

A ransomware attack on lab provider Synnovis disrupted several hospitals and health centres in London, causing delays to operations and blood tests. Healthcare providers are increasingly targeted in digital attacks, with ransomware attacks representing 54% of cyber incidents from January 2021 to March 2023. However, only 23% of healthcare organisations had a dedicated programme to tackle ransomware in 2023. Cyberattacks mostly target patient data for financial gain.
